Casa Entre Muros: A House Between Walls

The Casa Entre Muros, built in Tumbaco, Quito, Ecuador and designed by al bordE Arquitectos (David Barragán and Pascual Gangotena), was generated from the starting point: "There is always another way of doing things and another way for living". Far from the pollution of the city, the house is set in the hillside of the Ilaló volcano in a indomitable land. It's limited by two streams opened to the landscape of the valley. A cut in the sloping land helps to generate a platform for the project and also to get enough raw material to build the massive party walls.

The waving form as a result of this cut in the land, defines the position and order of every wall. The succession of rammed earth walls and the different heights of the roof caused the division of the house even for the activity or the user. To avoid the domino effect, the party walls break their parallelism solving the structure and strengthening the character of each space within. A long corridor is used as an element that isolates the project from their immediate neighbours and reinforces the autonomy of every space.

This architecture aims to highlight the nature of the material elements that compose it, promoting the aesthetic, formal, functional and structural qualities as well as the maximum respect of the environment.

Under the Spotlight

The winner of the $50,000 first prize will be announced in August and now you can review the top 400 entries in the AFH, Open Architecture Challenge 2009/Schools at the link below. As a member of the jury I marvelled at the sheer volume and variety of creative entries and gained some unique insights about the do's and don'ts of competitions. That might be the best reason to review this, since you will see the entries just as the jury did and perhaps gain some valuable insights of your own. You can also join the main AFH social network on this page. Cheers, Michael

Constructing Confusion

.Have you ever experienced the situation when you wrote something and the other party misunderstood it or interpreted it differently, sometimes to the extent of even getting hurt or/and insulted. This is what comes when we are too sensitively inclined and read overmuch between the lines for Hidden Messages. “HIDDEN MESSAGES”? What in the name of heaven for?

But this is also a pointer to how we complicate our lives by assigning meanings to things by letting our imaginations roam and fly of the h… Continue

You know it's the monsoon when...(3)

...everything's covered in blue!

Motorbike parked in Sion - it was covered last evening to protect it from rain at night.

Verandah cover to protect the daily washing

This morning I saw a pav-wallah on a cycle, his bread was covered with a blue sheet. The temples have blue coverings. Shop awnings are blue. I saw an apartment block where the whole terrace was covered in blue. In Dharavi, there is a street where 4-5 shops do nothing but sell these blue sheets.

Keep your eyes open and you'll see bright blue just about everywhere!

You know it's the monsoon when... (2)

... the horses are suddenly excited because of the cool weather.

Dawn riding at the Mahalakshmi Race Course

Riding in the summer was hot and sweaty even at 6:30 am.

After the first showers, during the riding class, our instructor said "Aaj ghode fresh hain... mausam thanda hai na."

Indeed they were up to more tricks than usual... (prancing around, tossing their heads.. and the more badmaash ones bucking and almost throwing off their riders).

As for me, I enjoyed the cool, almost cold breeze at dawn.

You know it's the monsoon when...

...the sea is a sullen brooding brown even when the sky is bright blue.

GE Introduces Green Gizmo Home

gehome468.jpg They call it the Net-Zero Energy home. It has ground source heat pumps (promising a 30% reduction in energy use), photovoltaic arrays, supplementary wind power, high efficiency appliances and battery storage, all talking to each other through a Home Energy Manager. That's a lot of impressive technology. But are green gizmos the best way to achieve net zero energy? ...

What's So Special About the Liquid-Cooled Hydralux LED?

hydralux lamp image All the blogs are covering the Hydralux-4 liquid cooled LED being distributed by EternalLEDs. Ariel at Fast Company thinks it won't be an instant hit; Wired just craps all over it, saying "We don’t really see the advantage of this over other LED bulbs. If Eternal LEDs had put a mini lava-lamp inside, though, we’d be happy to pay the $35." Or, ...

BedZED 7 Years On: Did This Pioneering Development Work?

BedZED Seven Years on Report image Image credit: Bioregional Development Group BedZED Residents' Footprints Analyzed Back when TreeHugger was young, there was an awful lot of talk about BedZED - or Beddington Zero Energy Development - a groundbreaking housing project designed to reduce residents' impact through the holistic lens of ecological footprinting. It wasn't without its problems - BedZED's biomass regional heating system packed in, and there were rumors of a rift betwee...
